VICTORIA, 1884, AE77

$2,900.00

BHM3177 Wt. 307.39gr. By J.S. and A.B. Wyon.  The original guildhall was a timber building built in the early 12th century, erected on the site of Londinium’s 1st century Roman amphitheater. A  larger stone building with a grandiose hammered beam roof was finished in  1441.  The Great Fire in London in 1666 damaged the wooden roof which was replaced. Unfortunately, the London Blitz in World War II burned out the guildhall and when rebuilt the fabulous hammered beam roof was not replaced. Today the guildhall is an absolutely gorgeous medieval structure featuring high gothic features so loved by the Victorians.  This medal commemorates the refurbishment and building of the London City Council Chamber dedicated on the 2nd of October 1884. A massive medal and in my opinion the height of the engraver’s art. The medal features a superbly intricate interior of the new Council Chamber Guildhall. This medal is perfection. Not a mark, hairline or spot, patinaed with a warm milk chocolate color. The case is brown leatherette with gold lettering and trim with a red velvet and white satin interior. The case has worn corners and the clasp is broken. A superb example.  It’s incredible that such a heavy medal has not a single blemish. Heritage Auctions sold in Jan 2025 a PCGS Speciman 65 for 0ver $2300. in my opinion this medal is superior at least an MS66. FDC
