Victoria, 1872, AE77
BHM2928 Wt. 247.82gr. Cased but not original. Commemorates the recovery of Prince Edward from typhoid. While visiting Scarborough Lodge in North Yorkshire, Edward contracted typhoid fever, the disease that was believed to have killed his father, Prince Albert in 1861. There was great national concern, especially when one of his fellow guests at the lodge, Lord Chesterfield, died. Edward’s recovery was greeted with almost universal relief and was celebrated with a religious service of Thanksgiving in St Paul’s cathedral. A large format, thick bronze medal weighing in at nearly 248 grams. This example is wondrously mark, free and spot free with a lovely mahogany patina. The fields are mirrored so that the devices impart a cameo effect. It is the finest example that I have seen and is absolutely superb especially considering its size. The case also is in pristine condition showing only the slightest fading in the gold embossed lettering. Stacks Bowers Auctions recently sold an example graded MS64 in February 2025 for $3120.00. 400 struck Ex Bonhams Auction 10 June 1993 Lot 3376 Part. FDC
