Eanred, c810, AR Styca

$510.00

S0860 A rare example struck in base silver. Moneyer Edwine.  Obv: “+EANRED REX” around a large central pellet surrounded by beaded circle. Rev: “+EADVINI” surrounding the same central motif as the obverse. Small striking crack. Eanred was King of Northumbria from 810-843, but the dates of his reign are subject to some dispute. Eanred’s father, Eardwulf was deposed by a rival in 806 but was restored to power by the influence of Charlemagne in 808.  If Eanred’s reign started in 810, his father must have died shortly after being restored. Base silver styca’s were Eanred’s first coinage but Viking raids and warfare with rivals resulted in their quick debasement to copper and bronze.  Bought from Steve Mansdorf April 3, 1979.  AU-UNC
