Charlotte, 1814, AR53, Extremely Rare
BHM0778 Wgt. 72.35gr. Celebrates the betrothal of Princess Charlotte of Wales, daughter of George IV and as his only (legitimate) child heir to the British throne, to William, Prince of Orange. Charlotte proved to be a strong willed as her mother and soon called off the engagement. This in turn angered her father, the King, and started a battle of wills between the two. In the end George IV, who was not nearly as popular as his willful daughter, lost the contest. Charlotte was allowed to marry the man she loved, Leopold of Saxe Coburg, who later became the King of Belgium. However, after being married happily for less than two years, Charlotte died in childbirth in November 1817, she was only 21. The entire nation was thrown into mourning and a succession crisis ensued. A frosted, large format, silver medal, very rare in silver. A few areas where the frost on the surfaces is disturbed by light cabinet friction, but no contact marks. Very possibly the finest known example of this extremely rare medal. Ex Baldwin’s Auction #19, 4 May 1999, lot 834 NFDC
