MI568/202  wt 69.00gr Obv: His armoured bare headed bust facing right, legend ‘CAROLUS SPENCER.” around. Rev: centered inscription “DUX DE MARLBOROUGH MDCCXLII”.  Charles Spencer, 3rd Duke of Marlborough, was a soldier and loyal servant of King George II. This particular medal in silver is unlisted in “Medallic Illustrations” but is included in Eimer. The design corresponds to the bronze example listed in “Medallic Illustrations” that was struck by Dassier as part of his “illustrious men’ series.  The medal is nicely toned reflecting some gold and indigo highlights and possesses a remarkable, high relief portrait. The only flaw is on the rim at 1230 and 3 oclock which appears to be an original die or striking flaw. The location of the edge disturbance rules out any mounting and there is no corresponding effect on the reverse rim.  Extremely rare in silver with no other examples showing up for auction in the past 20 years.
