ROME, OTACILIA SEVERA, Antoninianus, 246
RSC9 Obv: Diademed bust right on crescent, “M OTAC M SEVERA AVGG”. Rev: Concordia seated left holding patera and double cornucopiea. “CONCORDIA AVGG”. Nice old cabinet toning, good silver. A rare obverse legend. Marcia Otacilia Severa was the wife of Marcus Julius Philippus, commander of the praetorian guard under emperor Gordian III. After Gordian “suddenly” died while campaigning in the East, Philip was acclaimed emperor by the Syrian legions. It was widely believed that Severa had a hand in Gordian III’s demise. In any event Philip was eventually overthrown, Severa’s only son was executed in front of her and Severa disappears from history. Philip I really debased the roman currency in order to pay the army and for a lavish display of games that celebrated the 1000th year of Rome. A choice example, lustrous with the reverse being nicely toned with blue and gold highlights. UNC or nearly so.
