ROME, JULIA DOMNA, Denarius, 211
RSC123 Obv: Draped bust right, “JVLIA AVGVSTA”. Rev: Cybele seated left on lion throne holding scepter. “MATER DEUM”. Julia Domna was the wife of the Emperor Septimius Severus and the mother of Caracalla. Julia was well respected throughout the empire in large part because it was she who kept the administration of the empire functioning during the reign of her son. After Caracalla’s murder in 217 at the hands of a disgruntled soldier, she committed suicide in Antioch. A nice example with even grey tone, NEF
