Richard II, 1377-99, 4D EXTREMELY RARE ERROR, Ex Marcus Brown Collection
A UNIQUE? ERROR
S1679 N1320b London mint Early bust in the style of Edward III, retrograde Z in legend. Obv: reads “RRANCIE” instead of “FRANCIE” as last issue groats of Edward III. Richard II groats are a bit rare as a group possibly indicating that there was a deliberate and thorough effort to recall and recoin Richard’s coins after he was deposed in 1399. In any event I have never seen this error on what few coins I have seen. An extremely rare error, possibly unique. Out of four coins graded by NGC, the sole groat of Richard II to not receive a “details” graded and therefore the highest graded. An example that was crinkled and had a small gouge on the portrait, but nevertheless still graded AU55 by PCGS, was sold in a Stacks Bowers auction in Jan 2022 for $4600 plus buyers fee. This example is from the Marcus Brown collection sold by Bowers and Merena Auctions, Nov 1983 NGC XF40.
