Queen Charlotte, 1762, AR29

$1,125.00

BHM0074  Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz married George III in September 1761. This medal was issued to mark the official birthday of Queen Charlotte celebrated in January even though she was born on 19 May 1744.   This issue was struck in two forms, as a round medal and also struck with an integral scroll mount. The ones with the scroll mount were presented to ladies at the court and meant to be worn as a brooch or necklace pendant. These examples are extremely rare, the medals without the mounts are also very rare.  This item is in choice condition and is a little jewel of a piece with light toning over mirrored fields. The portrait has no marks of any kind, the fields show some scattered hairlines visible with a glass. The finest example I have seen in fact the only example I have come across with no auction records for the past 20 years Valuable as a medal and as a piece of mid 18th century jewelry.  Bgt Spink & Son sale #87, October 1991 lot 542.
