Offa, 780-790, 1d SOLD

$3,900.00

S0905 N318 Very rare, Portrait issue, type Eb. Obv: Diademed head facing right. Rev AHLMUND in three lines within a torque. Personally I don’t think that the experts have the reverse description of a “serpent torque” correct. I dont see a serpent head on this reverse and if this is a torque it’s broken at the top and pearls? are dropping inside.

Offa is considered the most important English king before Alfred the Great and ruled for some four decades (747-796).  During his rule he established Mercian dominance over all the other Saxon kingdoms south of the Humber, started formal commercial ties to the Carolingian empire and firmly solidified the silver penny as the staple of English coinage.

Much original lustre and a full clear strike. Found at Abbots Bromley Staffs 1953 NEF
