Henry VIII, 1547-51, 1/2D, An Impressive Pedigree Coin
S2426/N1889 Wgt .22gr. Tower mint, no MM. Obverse reads H’ D. G’ ROSA SINE SP. One pellet in one quarter of the reverse. A coin in the name of Henry VIII struck in the reign of Edward VI. These small change coins are for me, the real story of circulating coinage in 16th century England. These are the coins used everyday trade by common people and I always find it fascinating to consider who may have handled them. This coin possesses an unusually expressive portrait of an older, bearded, stern looking King Henry who was dead when this coin was issued. These posthumous half pence are normally found in such crude, rough condition that no one has even submitted an example for grading. Possibly one of the finest known with an equally impressive pedigree EX SPINKS NORWEB, LOT 335, Part2; LOCKETT LOT 1850; CARYLON BRITTON, Bought from Spinks in 1959. NGC XF45
