Henry VIII, 1526-44, 4D, Ext Rare Error

$2,650.00

A UNIQUE ? ERROR

S2337C/N1797 2nd coinage Laker bust A3, Lombardic lettering, saltires in cross ends mm rose, saltire stops in legends. Incredibly the obverse legend reads “HERIC x VIII x D x G x R x AGL x Z x FRANCE”. The king’s name is misspelled, something I have never seen on any late medieval English coin. Over the last 50 years I have seen or handled hundreds of Henry VIII groats and have never seen this error. Interesting to note that HERIC sounds suspiciously close to how a semi literate layman would abbreviate hereticus, latin for heretic. It is fun to speculate that some engraver opposed to Henry’s rejection of papal authority, which he did in 1532, prompted this response. However, this is not likely, as the aftermath of such a protest wouldn’t end well. Incredibly rare and most likely unique.  NGC EF 40
