George II, 1736, AR42
MI516/71 Wt. 36.76gr. In 1736 Anne Princess of Orange, daughter of King George II of Britain and wife of William, Prince of Orange was finally pregnant. Anne previously had a “false pregnancy” in 1734, so the birth of this child was widely anticipated. Such a child would be in line for the English throne as well as ruler of the Netherlands. Unfortunately, the birth did not go well and on December 8th, 1736, after four days in labor, it was obvious that Anne was weakening from the effort. It was decided to kill the child and save the mother. Anne was saved, but devastated at the death of her baby girl, as were the general populace who were anticipating an heir and the political stability that an heir brought. The little baby lay in State for three days before being buried on December 12th, 1736 (December 19th old calendar) OBV: The crowned coats of arms of Anne and William. REV: Hope holding the child, blanketed in a shroud. The legend ‘SPES ALTERA SURGIT” , “Hope shall rise again.” A high relief strike, nicely toned with flashes of lustre in the devices. No marks but some expected cabinet friction as the high relief of this medal extends beyond the height of the rim. Rare. Ex Glendinning sale March 1989 lot 515. CHAU
