EDWARD VII, AU40, 1902, PREVIOUSLY UNKNOWN MEDAL IN GOLD

$11,600.00

BHM3741  Coronation of Edward VII, by Boucher, issued by Spinks. AN EARLY ISSUE WITH THE INCORRECT CORONATION DATE

Previously unknown in gold. This medal is listed in gold in 76mm and 46 mm, but the smaller size (40mm) was only recorded as being struck in silver and bronze by both Eimer and BHM. Furthermore, Spink only advertised for sale the gold, silver and bronze 76 mm medal, each sold in a leather case, along with 40mm silver and bronze medals and  23mm size medals in bronze that were sold pierced for suspension. Since this size was not advertised for sale to the public, it is likely a unique one off strike made for the Spink and Sons archive. Stamped 18ct on the edge. Ex Bowers and Merena Sale June 2002, lot 1781.  A superb example, showing only a few light scattered tic marks in the obverse field. Horribly undergraded by NGC.     NGC MS63
