Commonwealth, 1651/49, Unite, Mint State,
S3208/N2715 MM Sun The flaw to the right of the 5 indicates that this coin is 1651 struck over 1649, see English Gold Coinage by Maurice Bull – no. 38 (R2). Slight clip at 7 o’clock, but likely done at the mint because this coin is of full weight, 5.96 gr. and clearly never circulated as it still possesses full semi-prooflike brilliance and needle sharp strike. Tied with two others, with one more graded at MS64 being the highest graded by PCGS and NGC. I used to own one of the other coins graded MS 63 but sold that piece as this coin was superior in strike. A comparable example sold recently in a November 2024 Morton and Eden auction for L42000 plus commission ($65500) Please note that the overdate is not noted on the holder. In my opinion it doesn’t add value to the coin but is an interesting feature. For a similar coin see Baldwins Auction #113, lot 291. Bought Christies Auction 10/13/1992 LOT 118 NGC MS63.
