Charles II, 1660-62, Broad, Rare Pattern in Silver
N2655 Pattern broad struck in silver by Rawlins or Vanderdoort. Struck in silver and in high relief. MM Lis, no mark of value. Sold with an old collectors ticket. Also considered a possible pattern for a shilling. IMO this is probably meant to be a shilling pattern as there is another type of this size and design but on a thicker flan with XX in the field denoting its value of 20 shillings. This coin is struck on a thin flan and is shilling size. At this time, Rawlins was an established mint engraver while Vanderdoort was a Dutch engraver who was a favorite with Charles I and appointed as his Keeper of Pictures. There was definite competition between the two and my guess is that Vanderdoort was proposing an entire line of coinage using this bust and reverse. In any event it is very rare.
