William III, 1697B, Sixpence, PEDIGREE COIN EX MARTIN HUGHES COLLECTION, Highest Graded

$1,255.00

S3532/E1555  Bristol mint. 1st Bust later harp, small crowns, 5 strings to harp  Ex Martin Hughes Collection. Ex Spink Numiosmatic Circular February 1994 lot 436.  Sold Spinks Auction November 1999, lot 278  Light toning with abundant lustre especially on the reverse. Some evidence of die clashing on the obverse. Small (tiny) 7 in date. Interesting to note that the engraver was using a G punch that had lost its inward turning serif making the G in “GVLIELMVS” it look like a C. To remedy this when he came to punch in the G in “GRA” he used a small square punch to mimic (as best he could) the missing serif and proving once again, “Mater artium necessitas”.  The highest graded by NGC and PCGS combined and quite possibly the finest known. An MS63 graded example without the punch improvisation brought over $1100 in a March 2025 auction. NGC MS64
