William and Mary, 1694, Half Pence, EXTREMELY RARE ERROR UPSIDE DOWN V FOR FIRST A IN BRITANNIA
S3452/Peck? Extremely rare with the first A in BRITANNIA being a V. Not noted by Peck. Even more incredible it appears that the first V in GVLIELMVS has been struck over an upside down A. I have never heard or seen of another example of this date with both these errors. Although graded as an AU by NGC, this coin has no marks or other signs of circulation except for some cabinet friction on some hair curls. However, this piece was struck on a cast flan and shows the expected porosity while the head of Britannia shows a little more detail than normal. Right now the only example known. I would expect that there are more examples out there but the copper coinage of Wiliam and Mary has been extensively studied and collected, yet this coin is the only one I could find. Even the Spink Standard catalogue now lists six different error varieties, but this error is not one of them. Also to note, the V which replaces the first A is definitely not from the same punch as the second A in BRITANNIA making it very unlikely that this error originates from a filled in die. A real prize for the specialist collector. A 2023 Heritage sale of a much more common yet still very rare variety/error where the reverse stops were missing, in EF45, fetched over $1000. NGC AU58BN
