S3852D  No die number. Roman 1 in date. Although called a Roman I the actual 1 in the date is an upside 1 struck over a 1 giving it the look of a Roman I.   NGC has graded a total of 5 coins of this variety, the highest being an AU55. This is possibly one of the finest known of this rare error as Spink only prices it in grade of F and VF meaning that higher grades don’t come up in commerce.  Possibly the finest known example is the one Heritage Auctions sold in 2011. It was a Roman 1, graded PCGS MS64, but like the coin on offer, the variety was not mentioned on the holder.  At least two bidders recognized the coin and the bidding quickly pushed the bids higher, finally going to a very astute buyer for $5750.
