Victoria, 1870, 1/2 Sovereign, RARE (R4) COARSE BORDER TEETH
S3860A Very rare type with coarser border teeth, no dot on shield, listed by Marsh as (R4), 15-25 known. Die number 3, some lustre. Missing from all the specialty gold collections recently sold. Unknown in UNC, this is the best example I’ve seen, so far as none of this variety has been specified by NGC or PCGS. However, Heritage, in May 2024 sold an NGC graded AU58 for $1200 which the cataloguer noted was the coarse beading variety even though it was not noted on the holder. Despite the slightly lesser grade, this example for sale possesses superior lustre to the auctioned piece as well as fewer marks. Please note the variety is not labeled on the holder. NGC AU55
