Victoria, 1853, Sovereign, Extremely Rare D/I in FID

$2,290.00

S3852 2nd bust with larger head.  R2 Scarce date, WW in relief, 2nd larger head. D over I in FID. this previously unknown overstrike (not noted on holder) catapults this coin to a R4-R6 rarity.  The last thirty years have seen the sale of some fabulous Victorian sovereign collections which in turn spurred the exploration of the series for mint errors and overstrikes. Production must have been furious which led to a number of die punching errors. This coin is a previously unknown example struck from a die where the I in FID was punched in twice to read FII, but the error was discovered and saved by punching in a D over the last I.  However, the die sinker missed by a millimeter revealing the overstrike. A quick comparison with the D in DEI, the next word in the legend, confirms the error.  Lustrous but with typical bagginess for grade. Right now, the only example known.  Ex  Baldwins Sale, 15 May 2013 lot 992   AU58
