George II, 1749, 1/2 Guinea, EXTREMELY RARE DATE
S3685 Extremely rare date. Unpriced in Krause and until a few years ago only listed as extremely rare in the Spink/Seaby catalog. A date missing from all the important British gold collections sold in the last 35 years with only about five auction appearances within the last 25 years. The latest was in a Spink auction held in January 2024 where an AVF/VF example brought the equivalent of $1400 plus a 25% buyers fee or about $1750. The fabulous Sincona British Collection Part IV which contained many gold rarities that have been off the market for decades and sold in 2023, only had a Fine example which sold for $1117 plus buyers fee. Ex. Hans A. Land collection bought from a Heritage Auction held on 13 January 2003, lot 12761. NGC has graded five coins all with a “details” grade, while PCGS has none graded. A very pleasant VF with only a few light contact marks and even wear.
