S1613/N1228 York episcopal mint under Archbishop Thoresby. Quatrefoil with pellet in center of reverse. Scarce, some original lustre. The Stanwix hoard was discovered in Oct 1986 by two metal detectorists. They continued to unearth coins until the following spring eventually turning up 2267 Edwardian coins and shards of a pot that once contained the coins. About 260 coins were retained by museums the rest (about 2000 coins) were sold at a Sotheby’s auction held on 5 October 1989. The hoard was notable for the number of farthings found. It was likely deposited sometime in early to mid 1350s. At that point in English history, the Black Death was ravaging the country. The plague was first noticed in Weymouth in June 1348 and spread rapidly through the southwest of England, reaching London by early 1349 and affecting the entire country by late summer.
