$67.00

SEAR372  30MM wt 14.2gr  Emperor Justin and Empress Sophis enthroned facing “D N IVSTINVS P P AVG” Rev: Large M in center ANNO to one side regnal year on the other below in exergue is KYZ (Cyzicus mint) Regnal year 6.  Justin II was the nephew of Justinian I and inherited the throne from him in 565. Although Justin came to the throne with a greatly expanded empire, it also came with an empty treasury.  Territory was lost to the Avars and Lombards in the West and the Sassanids in the East. Towards the end of his reign these pressures caused Justin to lose his wits. It was said that he made sounds like an animal and required organ music to be played continuously to calm his mind. His wife, the Empress Sophia who took over the governing (behind the scenes) persuaded Justin to adopt as his son and heir Tiberias Constantius, a very successful general.  Justin II elevated Tiberias to the rank of Augustus on 26 September 578 and conveniently died nine days later.  Nice patina GVF
